Yen-Ting Hsu

Welcome!

I am an incoming postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica. I received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California, San Diego in 2026.

My research lies at the intersection of local democracy, urban placemaking, and urban culture. My dissertation and ongoing book project examine how cultural heritage production shapes global city-making. I argue that heritage production operates as a participatory placemaking practice through which competing urban imaginaries are governed and transformed into urban realities, thereby shaping what I call global-city character. I use a mixed-method approach that combines qualitative and quantitative evidence to study these processes. 

In addition, I have conducted research on fiscal democracy and empowered teaching practices, and I have been actively involved in professional communities such as People Powered and the North American Taiwan Studies Association.
